Sitting astride the West Virginia/Virginia state line, Bluefield is a twin city with the lofty East River Mountain forming the border. Named for the area's blue chicory, the town is naturally "air-conditioned" due to its altitude of one-half mile above sea level.

As you enter Charleston, West Virginia's state capital, it's hard to miss the beautiful gold-leaf dome of the State Capitol building rising 300 feet above the street, making it the largest in the country. Located at the terminus of the West Virginia turnpike in the western part of the state, Charleston is home to West Virginia State College and the University of Charleston. This trading and industrial center for the state offers plenty of cultural activities and outdoor recreation.

Set at the junction of two Native American trails, Lewisburg was once a town of colonial forts and a Civil War skirmish. Today, Lewisburg's 236-acre historic district with more than 60 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries is the draw to this town in southern West Virginia. Nearby White Sulphur Springs was the 18th century destination for rich visitors who came to "take the waters" at the town's mineral springs. The famous Greenbrier Hotel is located here.

Summersville, a peaceful small town near the center of the state is surrounded by deep green woods. But once, life here was anything but peaceful. A state park marks the site of a decisive battle in the Civil War. The state's largest lake is located here and is a center for outdoor fun.
