West Virginia Map

West Virginia Eats

Description

So you’re a world traveler, culturally savvy, experimental, hungry and in search of something fresh. Find your way to West Virginia’s annual Roadkill Cook-Off. Okay, so it’s not actually real roadkill but the cook-off does call for meats frequently featured roadside, like frogs, or, less common outside of West Virginia, bear and hog. Famished? Thought so.

For those with milder appetites, the slaw dog, a hot dog topped with cole slaw, offers a less daring alternative, as does the pepperoni roll, a bread roll with pepperoni baked inside. Look also for an assortment of comestibles typical of the South, from cornbread and beans to fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Less common in the South, but entirely memorable, are ramps, wild leeks often served raw as a side dish.

Don’t let it drive you, but drinks across the state also offer a fine glimpse of the real West Virginia, whether you’re tentatively tasting Kirkwood Winery’s unusual Appalachian ramp wine or sampling their swiss chard rhubarb “varietal”. The associated Isaiah Morgan Distillery also makes legal singe-your-eyebrows-off moonshine as does West Virginia Distilling Company in Morgantown. On mellower days, consider a draft beer from a microbrewery like Blackwater Brewing Company (Davis) or a bottle of Nut Brown from the Mountaineer Brewing Company (Martinsburg).
